It was not cold. It was not icy. It was not snow. It was not skiing.
It was Four days of the complete opposite. But it was fun!
A great deal of fun!
Sometimes when we plan something and it does not go right to the design you wanted and had dreamed about, you feel disappointed, discouraged and not ready to change! I had those plans and they went astray, but instead of pouting and stamping my feet, (oops, I actually did that), I tried something else.
This week, instead of my planned birthday trip south to the snow and the cold weather, we went north to sunshine and bike riding. It was such a contrast to what I had originally planned for my 60th birthday but , honestly , it was so much fun.
My GP husband and I work hard in a private medical clinic where life this year has been relentless fast and very tiring. We definitely needed a break. That perfect break had been planned for a few days to the snow to relax and unwind and enjoy life once more. However, due to circumstances out of my control in the name of Covid-19 pandemic, we went north. Only 1.5 hours from home.
But even though so close to home, what a changed environment we had.
Instead of skiing and tobogganing and walking around the cold icy village, we had four days of sunshine, pushbike riding and walking the shops!
Now push biking is supposedly classed as a top-notch cardio workout. It apparently improves your cardiovascular health, lift your mood, and boost your fitness. Ostensibly, you are supposed to burn about 400 calories an hour. Plus, it supposedly strengthens your lower body, including your legs, hips, and glutes. Cycling can also help you to get a flat stomach…oh I have trouble burning the fat around my stomach and yes, cycling I really needed to do! Feeling the air flying around you as you pedal faster and faster as the sun beats down upon your helmet and the sweat pours off you as you struggle up those hills……great exercise…great workout….
But I did not ride this week for those reasons.
I rode because it was fun.
Yes, it was extremely hard at times going up the hills and down again and more up and down again. Yes, the hills were hard to climb and missing the gears to assist me completely, at times, I had to walk and push the pushbike! Certainly, attempting Mt Coo-tha , was a silly thing to do- but riding along the boardwalks next to the river, soaking in the sunshine, watching the people running and the many, many, many other fast bike riders who cycled around you and sometimes yelled at you because you were in the way,
And the fall off the bike I had…
And my husband trying to get run over by a bus and take me with him in the centre of Brisbane…
It was a great experience.
And it truly was fun!
Combining that with much needed sleep-ins and late starts to the day, seeing the clock at 6am and knowing I do not have to get up at that shrill tone but enjoy a few more hours sleep. Not having to worry about work commitments but instead enjoying a wonderful leisurely start to the day. Merge that with a few hours cycling of 30kms or so each day to different spots, followed by afternoon snuggles in the chair with a book or two, dinner out and above a most wonderful magical time with my husband…… No one else around!
What else could I ask for?
No, not quite the snow holiday planned.
But, you know, in reflection ,sometimes when we use the words ‘not quite’ what we planned’……we actually get so much more.
I did!
